LGBT book prize longlist announced.

Organisers of the Polari First Book Prize have announced the long list for 2012.

The competition is for a writer’s first book “exploring the LGBT experience.”

Paul Burston, Chair of the judges, said, “This is a strong long list which reflects the diversity of LGBT literary voices and the variety of ways in which authors make their voices heard. The judges would like to thank Linda Riley of Square Peg Media for her generous support in celebrating the inventiveness, distinctiveness and excellence of the very best of queer writing.”

The judges for this year’s contest are Paul Burston, chair and host of literary salon Polari, Rachel Holmes, the head of literature at the Southbank, literary critic Suzi Feay, books buyer Joe Storey-Scott and the writer and critic Bidisha.

The ten short-listed books were announced at last night’s Polari event at the Southbank. They are as follows:

The Polari First Book Prize is open to any work of poetry, prose, fiction or non-fiction published in the UK.

The short list will be announced in September, with the winner announced at the Polari fifth birthday party in November.

The winner will receive a cheque for £1,000, courtesy of media partners Square Peg Media, publishers of Out In The City and g3 magazines.

New Pride House launched for London Olympics.

A new Pride House festival has been launched for the London Olympics at the last minute after a lack of sponsorship meant the original event was cancelled.

Originally planned to go ahead on Clapham Common, it was revealed in April that the event had become “commercially unviable” according to a leaked email.

Now, a new venue in Limehouse has been confirmed as the site for the week-long celebration of LGBT community in sport under the leadership of Pride Sports, a social enterprise for the development of LGBT sport.

The new event has been confirmed with support from the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation, the Federation of Gay Games, GLISA International, the LGBT Consortium, and the Pride House Foundation.

Pride House will be based CA House, home of the Cruising Association, in Limehouse Basin from 3 to 7 August.

The festival will thereafter continue in various venues until 12 August, the day of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The global LGBT community and the public at large will be able to watch live coverage of the London summer Olympics and discuss relevant topics related to LGBT sport at the festival.

Organisers promise live music, exhibits and video presentations, and an associated sports programme, including a Football v Homophobia football tournament.

Lou Englefield, Pride Sports UK Executive Director, said Pride House would “provide a welcoming space for all, from Olympic athletes to recreational sports enthusiasts and spectators”.

She said the aim was “to welcome everyone to learn more about the vibrant LGBT sport movement while celebrating the London games.”

Gay Olympic speed skater and Gay Games Ambassador Blake Skjellerup is supporting the event. He said: “My visit to Pride House during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics was a major influence on my public coming out, and the support I received after doing so was overwhelming. Yet there is still a lack of LGBT based role-models in sport.

“I believe it is important for everyone, and especially young people, to see that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can still succeed and reach your highest levels. The legacy from the London Pride House 2012 for future Olympic Games will make a difference!”

Chad Molleken, chairman of the Pride House Foundation, stated: “Pride House 2012 will continue to build on what began in Vancouver, bringing together the entire community and allies. The Pride House Foundation aims to increase the number of role models in sport by supporting athletes, sports organisations and educational initiatives beyond 2012.”

Pride House 2012 said it would welcome all offers to support the event, either financially or through volunteering and said exact event scheduling is still in progress.

Alison Bechdel: Inside Her Head

The lesbian author says of a new book about her mom: "I think people who are well-adjusted are not going to be interested in this story."
Alison Bechdel’s first graphic memoir, 2006’s Fun Home, about her father committing suicide after she came out as a lesbian, was incredibly difficult to write, but in retrospect it was the easy one. Easy, that is, in comparison to the follow-up. “My father had been dead for 20 years,” Bechdel explains.
Not so her mother, who is alive and well and at the center of Bechdel’s latest illustrated memoir, Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama.
“Writing about my mom was much more complicated,” she says. “We’re part of [our mothers]. We come out of them. We’re like the same person, whatever gender you are.” That deep connection to her mother made this project incredibly fearsome. “I’ve been daunted for the past six years.”
Adding to the obstacles, Bechdel has taken a medium known for relative lightness and used it to tell a nonlinear story that explores the darkest of areas, namely the history of psychoanalysis, her own therapeutic process, and the chilling lack of affection between her and her mother, which haunts Bechdel to this day. “This is a much less comic comic book,” says Bechdel, who stretches the form to tell parallel stories, often within one frame, all in the service of understanding her mother and healing their relationship.
It’s material that can provoke wildly divergent reactions. The New York Times gave the book two reviews, one a rave, the other an outright pan. Bechdel explains that the negative one was written by Dwight Garner, a critic who had previously praised a collection of her cartoons, Dykes to Watch Out For. “So I think he’s just not interested in psychoanalysis. I think people who are well-adjusted are not going to be interested in this story.” She adds, “Fortunately, there are a lot of people who are not well-adjusted.”


Are You My Mother? is a source of ambivalence even for its author. “I just talked to my mother 10 minutes ago,” Bechdel says while sitting in a Los Angeles hotel room on a stop along her recent book tour. “She was saying she thinks her friends are reading it but not talking to her about it. She’s not sure what’s going on.” Bechdel pauses. “I mean, it’s weird.” She fears that she has forced her mother into an unreasonable position, having to endure a very public portrayal of her life.
It could be said that Bechdel’s mother was as much an actor in all of this as she (see: “We’re like the same person”). Take, for example, Bechdel’s interpretation of the reason she uses drawings instead of prose as her way to tell stories: “I feel like I kind of became a cartoonist as a way of diluting my mother’s scrutiny because she was the writer. Both my parents were English teachers. I felt like she was just this powerful, critical presence and I didn’t want to have my writing destroyed by her. So I found a way to write that she really couldn’t see, kind of like how teenagers have those high-pitched ringtones that adults can’t hear.”

  Χαίρεται χαίρεται!Αποφάσισα να γράψω ξανά σήμερα χάρη στο άρθρο που δημοσιεύθηκε νωρίτερα και που αφορά στο τι έπεται να συμβεί τις επόμενες μέρες ή μήνες σε αυτή τη χώρα με το θέμα των ακροδεξιών.
  Αν εξαιρέσουμε το γεγονός ότι η κατάσταση έχει ξεφύγει πια κι ότι οι συνθήκες που θα υπάρχουν στο μέλλον εφόσον συνεχιστεί κι "εξελιχθεί" σε κάτι μεγαλύτερο,σε κάτι χειρότερο η δράση των υπεροχότατων συνανθρώπων μας που επιθυμούν να "χτυπήσουν" και να βλάψουν όσο το δυνατό πιο πολύ τη διαφορετικότητα σε αυτή τη χώρα,οφείλουμε να σκεφτούμε ότι η επικρατούσα κατάσταση και τα δεδομένα που μας δίνονται συνεχώς,δημιουργούν πάνω απ'όλα τρομοκρατημένους ανθρώπους,ανθρώπους που φοβούνται να δράσουν,να αντιδράσουν και προτιμούν να κλειστούν μέσα σε τέσσερις τοίχους.Ανθρώπους που προτιμούν να θυσιάσουν την ίδια τους τη ζωή στο βωμό του φαινομενικού "ευ ζην",γιατί πώς γίνεται να ζει κάποιος ελεύθερος και να φοβάται;Δεν υπάρχει καμία απολύτως ελευθερία!Είναι δεδομένο!
  Βέβαια,είναι λογικό να θέλουν να προκαλέσουν το φόβο όλων μας,αφού απώτερος στόχος δεν είναι μια καλύτερη Ελλάδα,αλλά μια Ελλάδα με μικρά ρομποτάκια που ελέγχονται από μια μικρή ομάδα ατόμων...Δε μιλάμε μονάχα για την Ελλάδα όμως!Στη Ρωσία είδαμε τι έγινε με τους ομοφυλόφιλους,στην Ισπανία ήδη η νέα Κυβέρνηση είναι κατά της ισότητας gay και straight και κατά των gay γάμων,όπως έμαθα πρόσφατα κι από μια φίλη που σκόπευε να παντρευτεί τη σύντροφό της κι η οποία ζει στη Μαδρίτη.
  Εάν προσπαθήσεις να σκοτώσεις κάθε διαφορετικό στοιχείο,πρέπει να έχεις το νου σου να μη σε σκοτώσει αυτό στο τέλος!...και δεν αναφέρομαι σε σωματικό θάνατο!Όταν εσύ δεν έχεις επιχειρήματα και ο συνάνθρωπός σου μπορεί να σου δώσει 10,σκέψου πιο λογικά πριν σηκώσεις το χέρι σου "φίλε" μου...Ίσως αυτός ο άνθρωπος να έχει κάτι να σου δώσει!
  Η βία ποτέ δεν είχε καλά αποτελέσματα,λέτε να έχει τώρα;Αν χτυπήσεις έναν,ίσως σε χτυπήσουν 100 όταν δε θα το περιμένεις.Ένας gay(είτε είναι γυναίκα,είτε άντρας) δε σημαίνει ότι δεν έχει ψυχή,ότι δεν είναι άλλο ένα πλάσμα,ότι δεν έχει ηθική,τιμή και αξιοπρέπεια!Πιο αξιοπρεπής είσαι εσύ που σηκώνεις το χέρι σου σε αθώους;Εσύ που κρύβεσαι πίσω απ'τις πλάτες άλλων;Εσύ είσαι ο ανήθικος!Εσύ που χτυπάς ανθρώπους,γυναίκες,παιδιά.Εσύ που σκοτώνεις ψυχές! 
  Οι απειλές ίσως να μην πιάσουν τόπο αυτή τη φορά.Η μεγαλύτερη ευχή και κατάρα ταυτόχρονα θα ήταν να σου πούμε,"φίλε",να το βρεις από το ίδιο σου το παιδί(κάτι που δεν είναι και απίθανο να συμβεί),αλλά ξέχασα...Θα το χτυπήσεις κι αυτό,θα το κάνεις να ντρέπεται για την ταυτότητά του,θα το κάνεις να σκύβει το κεφάλι,επειδή θα νομίζει πως δεν αξίζει το σεβασμό!ΊΣΩΣ ΝΑ ΤΟ ΚΑΝΕΙΣ ΣΑΝ ΚΙ ΕΣΕΝΑ.Εμείς θα είμαστε εκεί όμως να το στηρίξουμε,γιατί πάνω από όλα είναι άνθρωπος!Με όλη τη σημασία της λέξης!
  Είμαστε gay,ναι,δε το αρνούμαστε!Είμαστε περήφανοι,όμως,και δε θα επιτρέψουμε σε κανένα ον να μας πείσει ότι η ζωή που ζούμε δεν θα έπρεπε να υπάρχει.Δεν είμαστε λαθρεπιβάτες στην ίδια μας τη ζωή,αυτήν έχουμε,αυτή ζούμε,σε αυτήν πιστεύουμε!Αξίζουμε όσα αξίζουν όλοι!Είμαστε φοιτητές,εργαζόμενοι,άνεργοι...όλα όσα είναι όλοι οι άνθρωποι που μας περιβάλλουν!Κανείς δεν έχει το δικαίωμα να μας στερήσει την ελευθερία και τα "πιστεύω" μας!ΚΑΝΕΙΣ!Δε θα το επιτρέψουμε άλλωστε.
  ΌΣΗ ΔΥΝΑΜΗ ΕΧΕΤΕ ΕΣΕΙΣ,ΑΛΛΗ ΤΟΣΗ ΕΧΟΥΜΕ ΕΜΕΙΣ.Μην μπαίνετε στον κόπο να μας απειλήσετε.Ζούμε σε μια ευρωπαική χώρα,ζούμε στην Ελλάδα,σε αυτή την Ελλάδα που γέννησε τη δημοκρατία και το σεβασμό,σε αυτή την Ελλάδα που τις γυναικες της αρχαιότητας τις είχαν μονάχα για αναπαραγωγή!Εσείς που κατηγορείτε εμάς και μας αποκαλείτε ανώμαλους,πηγαίνετε να ζητήσετε το λόγο πρώτα από το Σωκράτη,τον Αλκιβιάδη,τον Πλάτωνα.
Κι εκείνοι ήταν ανώμαλοι!Το ξέρετε καλύτερα κι από εμάς!

Χρυσή Αυγή προς ομοφυλόφιλους:Είστε οι επόμενοι.

Η  Χρυσή Αυγή συνεχίζει την εκστρατεία της. Τον περασμένο μήνα αποφάσισε να πετάξει ομοφοβικά φυλλάδια στο Γκάζι, μια περιοχή στην οποία συχνάζει η γκέι κοινότητα, σύμφωνα με την EP (europapress.es).

»Mετά τους μετανάστες, είστε οι επόμενοι», απειλεί το κείμενο των φυλλαδίων, το οποίο φέρει το λογότυπο της Χρυσής Αυγής. Στις 6 Μαίου, το ακροδεξιό κόμμα πήρε 21 έδρες στη Βουλή, με την υποστήριξη του σχεδόν 7% των ψηφοφόρων. Αυτό αποτελεί ένα σημάδι της ανόδου της ξενοφοβίας στην Ελλάδα, ξενοφοβίας που έχει προκληθεί από την οικονομική κρίση που μαστίζει τη χώρα.

Σύμφωνα με τα παραπάνω,ο επόμενος στόχος είμαστε εμείς ξεκάθαρα...Πριν λίγο καιρό συζητούσα γι'αυτό το θέμα και ορισμένοι με έλεγαν υπερβολική.Περίμενα να δω...Δυστυχώς επαληθεύτηκα και ιδού τα αποτελέσματα!Θα φοβόμαστε να κυκλοφορήσουμε και στο δρόμο με τα ζώα γύρω μας...Έπεται και η δικιά μας σειρά,αρκεί να είμαστε προετοιμασμένοι γι'αυτήν...
