The first ever civil union in Queensland could be celebrated next month with the state's Civil Partnership Act starting on 23 February this year with a 10-day waiting period.
Although not marriage, Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser says the change in law is a huge step towards equality for LGBTI people in Australia.
'This is a landmark and historic occasion,' Fraser announced. 'I know that for many people this day has been a long time coming.
'While it isn't marriage it is the next best thing, and as far as a state government can go in promoting relationship equality.
'From 5 March, ceremonies will be able to be held at the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry and various magistrates courts across Queensland.'
The forms are now available to download from the Department of Justice and Attorney General website.
