"As a gay parent I must flee Russia or lose my children".

The first time I heard about legislation banning "homosexual propaganda", I thought it was funny. Quaint. I thought the last time anyone had used those words in earnest I had been a kid and my girlfriend hadn't been born yet. Whatever they meant when they enacted laws against "homosexual propaganda" in the small towns of Ryazan or Kostroma, it could not have anything to do with reality, me or the present day. This was a bit less than two years ago.
What woke me up was a friend who messaged me on Facebook: "I am worried about how this might impact you and other LGBT people with families." This was enough to get my imagination working. Whatever they meant by "homosexual propaganda", I probably did it. I had two kids and a third on the way (my girlfriend was pregnant), which would mean I probably did it in front of minors. And this, in turn, meant the laws could in fact apply to me. First, I would be hauled in for administrative offences and fined and then, inevitably, social services would get involved.
That was enough to get me to read the legislation, which by now had been passed in about 10 towns and was about to become law in St Petersburg, the second-largest city in the country. Here is what I read: homosexual propaganda was defined as "the purposeful and uncontrolled distribution of information that can harm the spiritual or physical health of a minor, including forming the erroneous impression of the social equality of traditional and non-traditional marital relations".
Russia has a lot of poorly written laws and regulations that contradict its own constitution, but this one was different. Like other contemporary laws, it was so vaguely worded that it encouraged corruption and extortion (fines for "homosexual propaganda" are backbreaking) and made selective enforcement inevitable. But it also did something that had never been done in Russian law before: it enshrined second-class citizenship for LGBT people. Think about it: it made it an offence to claim social equality.
St Petersburg passed the law in March 2012. I no longer thought it was funny. I actually choked up when I saw the news item about the bill being proposed at the federal level. My girlfriend had recently had a baby and this, among other things, meant we needed to sell our tiny cars and trade up to something that accommodated three kids and a pram. I asked her: "Are we doing this or do we just need to get out of the country?" We decided we were doing it. We are fighters, not quitters.
So I launched the pink-triangle campaign. I went on TVRain, independent internet and satellite-based television and recorded a segment showing pictures of my family and explaining how the law would make it a crime to say my family was equal to other families. I explained the history of the pink triangle. I called on people who did not want to see fascism in Russia to put on pink triangles.
Though I have always been publicly out, I had never done what I did then – talked about my family and asked to be seen as a lesbian rather than a journalist first. It seemed to work beautifully. People wrote to me and came up to me in the street. I had had 6,000 pink triangles printed up and I got rid of most of them within a few weeks.
The public chamber, an extraparliamentary body formed by the Kremlin, scheduled a hearing on the legislation. I testified, as did a number of human rights activists I respected. The chair read out a draft resolution. I also received private assurances from highly placed officials present that the legislation would never make it to the parliament's floor.
That was a year ago. The public chamber's resolution never materialised. In January 2013, the Duma passed the bill in first reading. The protesters who came to the parliament building that day were beaten up. There had been anti-gay violence in Russia before, most notably when a group of activists had attempted to hold a gay pride celebration in Moscow, but never like this: brutal beatings in broad daylight as the police looked on – and eventually detained the protesters, not the attackers.
One of my closest friends took part in the protest at the Duma that day. The following day, he was fired from his job teaching biology at one of the city's better schools. He was eventually reinstated after a public outcry – he was arguably the city's best-known teacher, with his own podcast and television and radio series – but I knew one thing: if he had been a gay man rather than a heterosexual ally, he would never teach in the city again. Oh, and around the same time, Moscow City court banned gay pride celebrations for the next 100 years.
In March, the St Petersburg legislator who had become a spokesman for the law started mentioning me and my "perverted family" in his interviews. I contacted an adoption lawyer asking whether I had reason to worry that social services would go after my family and attempt to remove my oldest son, whom I adopted in 2000. The lawyer wrote back telling me to instruct my son to run if he is approached by strangers and concluding: "The answer to your question is at the airport."
In June, the "homosexual propaganda" bill became federal law. The Duma passed a ban on adoptions by same-sex couples and by single people living in countries where same-sex marriage is legal. The head of the parliamentary committee on the family pledged to create a mechanism for removing children from same-sex families.
Two things happened to me the same month: I was beaten up in front of parliament for the first time and I realised that in all my interactions, including professional ones, I no longer felt I was perceived as a journalist first: I am now a person with a pink triangle.
My family is moving to New York. We have the money and documents needed to do that with relative ease – unlike thousands of other LGBT families and individuals in Russia.

Two men ‘cured’ of HIV with bone marrow transplant.

Boston doctors believe Timothy Ray Brown, the Berlin Patient, was not just a one-off after two more patients are believed to have been 'cured' with cancer treatment.
Two men are believed to have been 'cured' of HIV in Boston, with a bone marrow transplant similar to the Berlin Patient.
Two men may have been ‘cured’ of HIV in Boston.
The patients, who underwent bone marrow transplants several years ago for cancer, no longer have any detectable levels of HIV in their blood cells.
It is too early to tell whether they are still infected with the virus, so doctors are cautious about saying the two are ‘cured’.
‘I don’t want to use the “cure” word,’ said Doctor Timothy Henrich, a Brigham infectious diseases associate physician leading the study, according to Boston News
‘If they remain virus-free in a year, or even two years, after [stopping] therapy, then we can make a statement that the chances of the virus returning are very low.’
Henrich’s team are presenting its findings at the International AIDS Society Conference in Malaysia today (3 July).
Last summer, it was first reported that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was easily detected in the patients’ blood prior to their bone marrow transplants but could not be found eight months after the surgery.
The two men suffered from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the blood.
At the time, the men remained on HIV medications for safe-keeping. But now, the two patients have stopped taking their medications, with one coming off 15 weeks ago, and the other seven weeks ago.
The researchers carefully tested the patients’ blood weekly, and said they could find no signs of HIV. Henrich also removed and tested a piece of tissue from one of the patient’s intestines.
‘HIV could still be hiding in the brain, gut or lymph nodes,’ Henrich said.
The Boston findings are remarkably similar to the ‘Berlin patient’ called Timothy Ray Brown, who was given a bone marrow transplant for leukaemia and appeared to have been cured of HIV.
He is believed to have been the only person to be cured of HIV.
It was later found the bone marrow donor had a genetic mutation, CCR5-delta32, which is thought to provide resistance to the virus.
Since then, many doctors have longed to see if it was possible to genetically alter bone marrow cells to resemble the CCR5-delta32 mutation.
That way, they could give HIV patients their own genetically altered cells to wipe out the virus.
Bone marrow transplants are risky and possibly lethal, with doctors saying it is not a practical or ethical way of treating HIV.
In a statement made to Gay Star News, HIV and AIDS charity Terrence Higgins Trust’s Medical Director Dr Michael Brady said this case suggests the Berlin Patient was perhaps not a one-off.
He said: ‘For most people with HIV, it would be more dangerous to undergo a transplant than to continue managing the virus with daily medication.
‘While this is by no means a workable cure, it does give researchers another sign-post in the direction of one.
‘Until a cure is found, we urge people to continue using condoms and testing for HIV if they’ve put themselves at risk.’
The two, who were not identified, were ‘very positive’ about participating to help further research, Henrich said.
The patients will continue to be tested weekly and their medications will be returned if HIV is detected.

Microsoft to tackle anti-gay trolls online.

Gaming giant unveils a 'Reputation' system for Xbox One, which will segregate homophobic, sexist, abusive gamers.
Xbox One will unveil a 'Reputation System' aiming to segregate homophobic players.
Microsoft is planning to tackle homophobic trolls when it launches its new console the Xbox One.
The computing and gaming giant will isolate idiots who choose to use anti-gay, sexist, racist or general abuse towards other players on multiplayer online games.
It will have a ‘Reputation’ system, tracking gamers’ behavior when playing.
Speaking to gamer site Official Xbox Magazine, Microsoft’s senior product manager Mike Lavin said: ‘What we’re looking at doing is creating a very robust system around reputation and match-making.
‘Ultimately if there’s a few percent of our population that are causing the rest of the population to have a miserable time, we should be able to identify those folks.’
He joked the ‘segregated’ area of Xbox Live would be its own ‘version of hell’.
Lavin also suggested gaming groups would be given a score for their whole group reflective of the lowest person’s score in that group, in the hope peer pressure would force a change in order to raise the group’s gaming reputation.
‘We’re one of the only platforms that really take an interest in exploring and investigating major problems, and this extends from sexual harassment, to age harassment, to gender to everything else under the sun,’ Lavin said .
‘Really fostering a sense of community and providing an infrastructure for that is a huge deal.’
Microsoft has previously been criticized for what some believe to be homophobia. But the organization also has a strong LGBT staff group and has been faster than most tech firms to embrace pro-LGBT policies and support equality moves.
In 2008, a gay player was forced to change his Xbox Live screen name ‘theGayergamer’ because other members found it offensive.
Another player, shortly afterwards, was banned from the network after identifying herself as a lesbian. The policy was changed in 2010.
In 2009, Microsoft was forced to pay out after a gay employee sued the company for failing to do anything when co-workers branded him ‘Fag Boy’.
The company later met with GLAAD in order to combat homophobia on Xbox Live.

Gay marriage in Ireland to face a public vote.

Gay marriage activists are concerned if same-sex marriage becomes legal in Republic of Ireland and not the north, then it would be a 'great embarrassment'.
Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore has backed a referendum on same-sex marriage in Ireland.
Ireland will be putting marriage equality to the public vote in 2014, according to Deputy Prime Minister Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore.
The Labor Party leader has confirmed the coalition government will put forward the gay rights legislation to the public in the form of a referendum next year.
The announcement follows after the Irish Constitutional Convention voted overwhelmingly in favor of same-sex marriage.
Speaking at an event organized by the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), Gimore said it would ‘realistically’ happen soon.
‘I suppose realistically we’re probably looking at next year sometime,’ he said.
‘The commitment we have given is that once the Constitutional Convention presents its report in respect of the part of the Constitutional Convention dealing with same-sex marriage, that report is going to be tabled I think this month, formally tabled.
‘There is then a four-month period for the Government to consider the report of the Constitutional Convention.’
Gilmore added: ‘We have committed that we will make a decision within that four-month period on what would be our response to the Constitutional Convention.
‘Then in the case of a referendum on same-sex marriage, it would then be an issue of when that takes place after that.
‘I suppose realistically we’re probably looking at next year sometime.’
The gay marriage referendum is likely to be held on other progressive suggestions recommended by the Constitutional Convention including decreasing the voting age to 16.
Gavin Boyd, from Equal Marriage Northern Ireland, said the south was moving a lot faster than the north.
Speaking to Gay Star News, he said: ‘I would like to think if Northern Ireland was the only jurisdiction in these islands without marriage equality, it would be a great embarrassment.’
Support for the issue in both Northern Ireland and the Republic are at an all-time high, with one poll suggesting 79% of the population support same-sex marriage.
