New York celebrates one year of gay marriage.

New York will celebrate one year of marriage equality this week.
The marriage equality law came into action on July 24th last year, making New York the sixth US state to give gay couples the right to wed. On the first day, 659 gay couples married.
However, it is unclear how many have tied the knot in the last six months. Figures say around 3,000 gay couples have married, but the figures do not include New York City.
Earlier this month, a court rejected a challenge to the law from an evangelical group.
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms claimed the state Senate acted illegally when it voted to approve a gay marriage bill last year.
The group said the Senate violated the state’s Open Meetings Laws by illegally prevented opposing senators from speaking and not sending the bill to the appropriate committees.
However, the Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Rochester ruled against the group and said New York governor Andrew Cuomo and other supporters did not violate any laws.
