Australian Finance Minister Penny Wong defends her family’s right to exist in magazine article.
Australia’s Finance Minister Penny Wong makes a powerful personal argument for gay marriage and parenting in the latest issue of SALife magazine.
In a head-to-head debate on gay marriage with Liberal Party senator Nick Minchin, Wong wrote:
‘Whether it be parenting or relationships, isn't it time we looked to substance over form? Rather than looking to someone's sexuality, let's judge relationships by markers such as love and commitment and respect. Rather than fighting for discrimination, let's remember there is nothing to fear from equality.’
Senator Minchin argued differently, saying that a minority group should not ‘demand that society should completely change the whole meaning of marriage to accommodate their self-proclaimed right to “equality”’.
Wong became a mother when her parter Sophie Allouache gave birth to a baby girl last December.
