President Obama raises $1.4 million at gay fundraiser.

Says adminstration's LGBT accomplishments are 'rooted in concept of fairness'.

President Barack Obama, who is still officially 'evolving' on the issue of gay marriage, managed to raise $1.4 million for his reelection effort at dinner Thursday (9 February) for high-paying LGBT donors.
The Washington D.C. event was held at a private home and during his opening remarks, Obama steered clear of the marriage equality issue during a week that the Washington state legislature passed a bill to allow same-sex marriage and an appeals court ruled that California's Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.
Instead, Obama focused on his adminisitration's accomplishments so far such as the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and changing federal policy to require that same-sex couples have equal hospital visitation.
Said Obama at the $35,800-per-plate event: 'What's been striking over the course of these last three years is because we've rooted this work in this concept of fairness, and we haven't gone out of our way to grab credit for it, we haven't gone out of our way to call other folks names if they didn’t always agree with us on stuff, but we just kept plodding along -- because of that, in some ways what's been remarkable is how readily the public recognizes this is the right thing to do.'
He acknowledged that there is still much more work ahead.
'There's still areas where fairness is not the rule,' Obama said. ' And we're going to have to keep on pushing in the same way -- persistently, politely, listening to folks who don’t always agree with us, but sticking to our guns in terms of what our values are all about. What American values are all about.'
It's not yet known if gay marriage was discussed during a Q&A session held after the opening remarks. A transcript of Obama's opening remarks was provided but not of the Q&A, according to Metro Weekly.
'We have the most terrific president, who's gotten more done for us in three years than all the other presidents combined in, you know, 220 years,' attendee Andrew Tobias told Metro Weekly. 'And if we re-elect him, we're gonna get a lot more progress to come.'
